Resonance of Bhāsantī (2019 - 20)

'Resonance of Bhāsantī' is a series of ancestral performative, aural, and visual translations of mechanical oscillations and Farady waves. These waves & vibrations were conceived during ritualistic mixed Indian practices performed by the artist (using a singing bowl handmade in North India with seven different metals). During the event, spectators were encouraged to participate & learn about sound-based fluid dynamics and North Indian sound practices.

Medium(s): water, paint & ink, handmade singing bowl (gifted by family in North India), artist as performer & ancestral vessel.

Below, an audio-visual collation formed through the intersection of captured sounds, video and photography, during the ancestral performative and participatory painting of 'Resonance of Bhāsantī' by Aminder Virdee.

'Resonance of Bhāsantī' has two converging areas of focus:

1. A metaphorical dig down into the roots of Aminder’s Indian heritage; race & ethnicity; cultural routines, rituals & expression; conflicts of the British & Indian acculturation; & mixed Indian ancestry roots as a child of the diaspora.

2. Aminder became obsessed with the almost-magical properties of the singing bowl which provided the shovel for a rabbit hole leading to the physics of sound. This formed the foundation of the series; the propagation of sound through various viscous - and stainable - liquids. The invisible movement, energy and fluid dynamics that resulted were captured. These invisible forces 'painted' the marks.
